This is a report about an educational expedition on US drone warfare and drone surveillance that George Guerci and I undertook into parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia in September and October 2012.

This was the final leg of the 2012 Know Drones Tour, the purpose of which was to not only to educate the public about drones but to learn what people are thinking politically across the country and to explore ways of increasing peace activism.

WHERE ARE THE DRONES TAKING US?

 

1. Endless Wars for Resources? Or Renewable Energy?

The Race for What’s Left, by Michael Klare describes intensifying struggles among industrialized nations for access to oil, clearly with the full intention of industrialized nations to burn up as much of it as possible. Klare calls for a crash plan to develop renewable energy sources and other basic materials.  A dramatically urgent program to cut burning of fossil fuels is needed, not only for peace but to stop global warming.

In spite of this, the US government is bent on using its military to gain and hold access to oil resources worldwide. The drone has a unique role in this drive for control because, unlike any other weapon, it can monitor the lives of individuals and groups for days on end and kill by remote control at a moment's notice.

US drones are attacking now in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, Uganda and the Philippines, in absolute disregard for international law and the US Constitution.  Thousands have been killed by drones and tens of thousands are living drone-terrorized lives.

TASTE OF DRONES - MADISON, WISCONSIN, by David Soumis

Veterans for Peace , No Drones Wisconsin, Occupy Madison, and local activists, conducted a die-in at the Madison Farmers Market and Taste of Madison on Saturday September 1, 2012.

This is an idea I have wanted to do for awhile. This event had a lot of impact on the pedestrians in the area, and even got us further motivated to continue on in our guest to ground the drones.

In 1935, retired Marine General Smedley Butler said of his military career: “I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers.”  

Today, if we look where US drones are attacking – Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia – we find areas rich in oil, minerals, agricultural products and/or important to shipment of these commodities.

1.    Many of the G8 countries – comprised of France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States and Russia – are former colonial powers that have thrived by capturing at gunpoint basic mineral, petroleum and agriculture resources around the world, paying relatively little and thus subsidizing their corporations and their national economies.

The 2012 Know Drones Tour will visit on the dates indicated the home districts of the following members of the 55-member Congressional Unmanned Systems (Drone) Caucus, whose mission is, as described by its website, “to educate members of Congress and the public on the strategic, tactical and scientific value of unmanned systems…”
